Fire brings life (Määkijä)

Most of the forests in Repovesi have been used for forestry purposes. The last felling took place in the 1990s, before the park was established. Due to the felling, the tree stands are unvaried and even-aged in places, and there is little decaying wood. Burning considerably improves diversity and the natural value of these forests. Forest fires are a natural way of regenerating the forest.

The forest in Määkijäniemi was burned in 2008. The burned area was a dense pine forest around 40 years old. Metsähallitus carries out restoration measures in Repovesi in collaboration with UPM, the owner of the Aarnikotka Forest Nature Reserve.
